From probably Boston’s most underdeveloped sports website…

WEEI.com has committed itself to serving as THE destination when it comes to Boston sports news, entertainment, and opinion, and part of that journey includes seeking out the Next Great Sports Blogger.

To facilitate this quest, WEEI.com will be running an unprecedented contest which will ultimately land two winners with the opportunity to blog on our web site while being paid $5,000 per year. This is Star Search. This is American Idol. This is WEEI.com’s search for the Next Great Sports Blogger.

A panel of judges, including WEEI Sports Radio on-air talent such as Gerry Callahan, Michael Holley, Mike Felger, other Boston sports media icons and athletes, and WEEI.com site editor Rob Bradford, will help narrow down the field to the 10 best bloggers. Starting Oct. 15, the finalists will go through a final round of challenges, and the WEEI.com readers will vote to determine who is better than the rest and has what it takes to be the best.

I’m pretty sure this isn’t a contest. If you read WEEI’s terms and conditions, the “weiner” “winner” is paid $9.61 per hour, with two hours max per day, five days per week. Isn’t that a job?

So this is WEEI’s master plan to develop a dominating Boston sports website? Hold a contest and pretty much give the job to the lowest bidder? I applaud them for hiring Will Leitch to pitch in, but if you really want to make a splash in the Boston market your going to need to hire some real talent with real salaries.

Either that or throw in a date with Hazel Mae to spice up the contest a bit. Jeez.
