It’s that time of year again, when you get to wait in line for 45 minutes at your local post office because they refuse to implement self service kiosks. Look on the bright side though, hopefully you won’t get audited, and you won’t have to deal with all of those pesky receipts again for another year.
Or, you could be like these guys and just not file or pay any taxes. Better yet, be like Wesley Snipes and just tell the IRS that they owe you money. That’s crazy right? Well, it’s crazy enough to put you in prison with a cell mate named Bubba, so I think you might want keep everything legit on the tax front.
If not, you could always find yourself in the company of this list of 5 celebrity tax evaders.
Wesley Snipes
Snipes was lucky enough to have 6 charges of failing to file income tax returns from 1999-2004 brought upon him by the IRS. He also defrauded of the IRS by amending his 1996 & 1997 income tax returns, claiming that he was due a $12M refund. Snipes received the refund, but was subsequently audited where the bean counters found that Snipes had flat out lied on his tax returns by claiming that he had no income.
In reality, Snipes was broke and just didn’t have the money to repay the IRS. In 2008 Snipes was sentenced to three years in prison for the charges related to not filing his income tax returns.
Al Capone
Income tax evasion ultimately put the Chicago gangster in prison, where he enjoyed being harassed by other inmates while a resident of Alcatraz.
OJ Simpson
In 1999 the state of California placed a lien for $1,435,484.17 on the Juice. He claimed he was a resident of Florida and did not owe the taxes. He is now in jail for being an asshole.
Richard Hatch
Richard Hatch was fortunate enough to win $1M from the show Survivor, and land a gig on a Boston radio station that paid him over $300k. To bad he didn’t pay any taxes on that money. The judge obviously wasn’t a fan of Survivor, and Hatch is scheduled to be released from prison this October, after serving a 51 month prison sentence.
Your favorite infomercial smut peddler, Joe Francis, is currently awaiting trial for his tax woes. A former accountant went to the IRS to rat Francis out (hoping to claim a reward) for over $20M of wrongful business deductions.
*Bonus round – Bert Reynolds, Sinbad, and Dionne Warwick
This trio hasn’t been charged with tax evasion, however they are the headliners on the state of California’s shit list, which can be seen here. I know Bert is good for the money, but the other two? Good luck Arnold.
